10 Oct 2019, Pune: Maharashtra Village Social Transformation Foundation (MVSTF) organized a day long training workshop to improve the learning outcomes of students in Zilla Parishad schools of Junnar taluka as part of the recently concluded Daan Utsav to celebrate 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The day-long program was conducted by an emerging social enterprise Butterfly Edu Fields. The program was conducted in six Zilla Parishad schools in three villages – Kalewadi, Vadgaon Kandali and Patagon Tarfeli. Altogether 24 teachers were imparted training in the day-long workshop.

As per the NITI Aayog survey, the learning outcome in mathematics is currently poor in India especially in the rural areas. As per the report the first step towards quality education lies in having quality teachers and to have quality teachers, the capacity of the teachers have to be considerably enhanced.

The workshop conducted for primary school teachers majorly focused on improving process and techniques of teaching maths to primary school children. It also focused on ways to enhance learning outcome of maths for the students at village level. The core idea is that children would retain a concept or a lesson if it is presented to them in a fun, exciting and novel way. In India, there is phobia around the subject. Math is still regarded as phobia is because of the traditional system of teaching mathematics. Rather than mugging up questions, students need to understand the concept and theory well.

As part of the workshop, all the classes from respective schools were installed with projectors and Smart TV which were used by the teachers to explain certain concepts through various online platforms. They teachers were also provided demo materials to explain certain concepts related to the curriculum. The walls of the classrooms were painted

with various information (regarding water conservation, phases of moon, freedom fighters, Scientists and other famous personalities). Computer and multiple tabs were also provided to each class to explain the concepts.

The teachers were given training on ways to make maths learning more joyful. The workshop also stressed on ways to identify students who have disliking for maths and techniques to tackle those specific and particular issues.
