State To Enforce ‘No Denial Policy’ Across Hospitals After Pregnant Woman Dies Over Treatment Refusal In Pune Hospital

Pune, 26th April 2025: In response to the tragic death of a pregnant woman after she was allegedly denied treatment due to financial constraints at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced on Friday (25th April) that regulations governing charitable and private hospitals will be made stricter. He also announced the introduction of a statewide ‘No Denial Policy’, which will soon come into effect and make it mandatory for hospitals to provide immediate care to patients without refusal.
Pawar made the announcement while laying the foundation stone for the new building of the State Family Welfare and Training Centre in Pune. The event also saw the inauguration of 43 new clinics under the ‘Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana Yojana’. The ceremony was attended by State Health Minister Prakashrao Abitkar, Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe, and other senior health department officials.
“The state is taking decisive steps to prevent incidents like the one in Pune from happening again,” said Pawar. “Despite receiving land and various concessions from the government to serve the underprivileged, charitable hospitals are failing to reserve beds for poor patients as required. This cannot be tolerated.”
Referring to the death of Tanisha Bhise, the pregnant woman who died due to delayed medical attention, Pawar called the incident deeply disturbing. “This tragedy has left a scar not just on her family but on the conscience of society. It has exposed serious gaps and insensitivity in the healthcare system,” he added.
The State Government has received reports from the inquiry into the incident and has assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. The ‘No Denial Policy’ will soon be enforced across all hospitals to ensure that no patient is turned away under any circumstance.
