Pune: Supply Of Hapus Mangoes Surges Ahead Of Akshaya Tritiya; Prices Drop Across Markets

Market Yard, 26th April 2025: With Akshaya Tritiya around the corner, a large influx of Alphonso (Hapus) mangoes from the Konkan region has begun arriving in key markets across Maharashtra, including Pune and Mumbai. The increased supply has led to a noticeable drop in prices, and both ripe and raw Alphonso mangoes are now widely available in the market. Depending on the grade, prices for a dozen ripe Alphonso mangoes currently range between ₹500 and ₹800.
Akshaya Tritiya falls on Wednesday (30th April) this year. Unfavorable weather conditions during the earlier part of the season—delayed monsoons, lack of expected winter chill, and rising temperatures—resulted in the shedding of early blooms. These climate changes significantly impacted mango cultivation in the Konkan region, leading to a 40-50% reduction in mango plantations compared to previous years. Due to lower-than-expected production, mango prices were initially high at the beginning of the season.
However, with the season progressing into its second phase, the supply has picked up. Traders at Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, stated, “There is a substantial inflow of both ripe and raw mangoes in the market now. Prices have stabilized compared to the early phase of the season. Due to lower fruit-bearing this year, the mango season is expected to end by 15th May, whereas it typically extends into the second week of June.”
Currently, around 3,000 to 3,500 crates of mangoes are arriving daily from Konkan, a significant drop from the 7,000 to 7,500 crates received per day in April last year. Despite the reduced volume, the quality of mangoes remains high this season, aided by the ripening effect of summer heat. Traders note that while this year’s prices are higher than last year’s, the fruit is well-graded and of good quality.
Current Prices of Alphonso Mangoes:
– Ripe Alphonso (5 to 9 dozen crate): ₹2,500 to ₹4,500
– Raw Alphonso (5 to 9 dozen crate): ₹1,500 to ₹3,500
– Per dozen ripe Alphonso: ₹500 to ₹800
Traders emphasized that the season will end earlier than usual, with mango arrivals tapering off by mid-May due to the reduced yield in Konkan this year.
