Mumbai, 18th March 2025: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday emphasized that the state will only honor the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and not that of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. His remarks came during the inauguration of the Shaktipeeth Temple dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj in Bhiwandi’s Shiv Kshetra Marade Pada area on Monday.

“It is unfortunate that the government has to ensure the protection of Aurangzeb’s grave despite his history of persecution,” Fadnavis said. “However, let me make it clear—Maharashtra will only glorify Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Any attempt to promote the ideology of Aurangzeb will face strict legal consequences.”

The temple, built by Shiv Kranti Pratishthan, serves as a tribute to Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to the nation. Fadnavis stated that such initiatives play a crucial role in keeping his legacy alive.

Controversy Over Aurangzeb’s Tomb
Fadnavis’ statement comes at a time when certain right-wing groups have been demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khultabad, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. While the site remains a protected monument under government regulations, Fadnavis clarified that its preservation is purely for historical record, not reverence.

“We are bound by law to maintain the site as part of historical documentation, but that does not mean it will be glorified in any manner,” he asserted.

Preserving Shivaji Maharaj’s Legacy
Speaking about the significance of the newly inaugurated temple, Fadnavis said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj devoted his life to protecting the nation, religion, and his people. This temple stands as a beacon of inspiration, narrating his legendary life through beautifully recreated historical events. Those who visit will undoubtedly find motivation in his story.”

The chief minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to restore and develop Shivaji Maharaj’s forts, memorials, and other historical sites. “These sites are not just remnants of the past; they serve as eternal sources of strength for future generations,” he said.

Fadnavis reiterated that Maharashtra’s heritage is deeply rooted in Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals, and any attempt to rewrite history in favor of tyrants like Aurangzeb will not be tolerated. “Shivaji Maharaj’s courage and vision will always be the guiding force for Maharashtra,” he concluded.
