Stray Cattle in Pune: PMC Approves Modern Shelters, Vaccination and Rehabilitation Centres
Pune, 18th August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Standing Committee has approved a proposal to establish modern cow shelters and veterinary facilities for the protection and rehabilitation of stray and abandoned cattle in the city, including the 34 villages newly merged into the civic limits.
The proposal was tabled by Standing Committee member Suhas Tingre and includes plans for modern cow shelters, veterinary hospitals, fodder banks, rehabilitation centres and vaccination facilities. The proposal was referred to the concerned department for its opinion, which was subsequently received in favour of the initiative.
The decision comes amid concerns over road accidents involving stray cattle, public safety and the health and welfare of animals. With the city’s population and traffic increasing, civic authorities have proposed dedicated infrastructure to manage stray cattle and provide them with appropriate care.
As part of the proposal, the PMC will undertake necessary action to establish modern cow shelters along with veterinary treatment and vaccination facilities, fodder management systems, and centres for the rehabilitation and care of stray cattle.
“Protecting stray cattle while ensuring the safety of citizens requires a balanced approach. The Standing Committee’s approval of this proposal is an important step in that direction. The administration should now ensure its effective and timely implementation,” Tingre said.
