Pune, October 2, 2020: Rising number of stray dogs has added to the woes of Puneites who are already reeling under the Covid-19 and its aftermath. Incidents of mishaps due to stray dogs rose during the lockdown. Recently a man lost his life due to an accident after a dog suddenly came in front of his two-wheeler.

According to the official records, 3,689 dogs were sterilized in the last six months. Apparently, on an average 12,000 dogs are sterilized every year. In 2018-19 sterilisation was performed on 12,241, 2019-20 19,630 while in 2020 it was only 3689.

Stray dog control unit runs under the Health Department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) according to the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Act 2001. The complaint of stray dog nuisance is resolved by the four zonal Medical Officers. Each Zonal Medical Officer has one dog van equipped to catch stray dogs. They are also linked with NGOs which perform sterilisation.

According to ABC Act 2001, the stray dog is caught and then sterilized, immunized and again released in the same area. Also left ear pinna of dog is cut slightly. Sterilized dogs are not caught again. Baby dog up to six months of age and lactating mother are not caught.
