Pune, 20th August 2023: The Pune-Mumbai Expressway has seen a notable reduction in accident rates, reflecting a promising trend in road safety. Analysis of statistics over a span of six months reveals a substantial 20 percent decrease in the total number of accidents and an impressive 42 percent reduction in fatal accidents.

The Transport Department’s concerted efforts, including round-the-clock monitoring of the route for six consecutive months, have resulted in tangible outcomes. Operations were carried out on more than fifty thousand vehicles, contributing significantly to the decline in accidents.

The Transport Department employed a multifaceted approach to curtail accidents on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Collaborative efforts from the air velocity teams of Raigad, Pimpri Chinchwad, Panvel RTO, and Pune played a crucial role in executing 24-hour operations throughout the six-month period from December 22 to May 23. This period witnessed a commendable drop in the occurrence of accidents, with the majority of actions being taken against vehicles exceeding the prescribed speed limits. More than 10,000 instances of speeding violations were recorded, resulting in necessary punitive measures being administered.

The successful outcomes can be attributed to several factors, including:

  1. Adhering to prescribed speed limits
  2. Avoiding lane changes without proper signaling
  3. Wearing seat belts while driving
  4. Conducting driver counseling sessions on the importance of maintaining appropriate speeds

The Transport Department’s proactive measures targeted a range of issues including speeding, improper lane changes, failure to use seat belts, illegal parking, mobile phone usage while driving, absence of vehicle licenses, uninsured and unlicensed vehicles, and the transportation of goods by passenger vehicles.

The sustained and rigorous efforts spanning six months have led to a significant decrease in accidents along the expressway. This reduction is a direct consequence of these proactive measures and serves as a testament to their effectiveness. Further initiatives are being undertaken with the aim of continually reducing accident rates.

Bharat Kalaskar, Deputy Commissioner of Transport Department, commented, “The ongoing commitment to enforce road safety measures has yielded tangible results in terms of reduced accident rates. We are dedicated to sustaining this momentum and further enhancing road safety.”
