Bengaluru(India), 3rd July 2023: Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian football team, has extended his contract with Bengaluru FC for another year, ensuring his presence in the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season. Despite approaching his 39th birthday in two months, Chhetri has committed to a fresh deal with the club that reached the finals of the ISL 2022-23 but were defeated by Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

In addition to the one-year extension, Chhetri’s contract includes an optional clause for an additional season, which, if triggered, would keep him at the club until 2025. Recognized as a symbol of Indian football, Chhetri continues to lead the national team, which recently climbed one spot to the 100th rank in the latest FIFA rankings.

Chhetri confirmed his decision to continue with Bengaluru by unfurling a banner at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, following the Indian football team’s victory over Lebanon in the SAFF Championship 2023 semifinals, where they emerged victorious with a 4-2 penalty shootout.

Expressing his delight, Chhetri stated, “Having signed a Bengaluru FC contract several times before, I can tell you that it always feels special, even when it may seem routine. I am extremely happy to spend two more years here.” With seven trophies already won at Bengaluru FC, Chhetri acknowledged the significant role played by the fans in influencing his decision. Despite receiving generous offers from other reputable clubs over the years, the unwavering support of the fans made it impossible for him to even consider leaving.

The veteran forward joined Bengaluru FC in 2013, when the club was first established, and has now completed a decade with the team, becoming the longest-serving player in its history. During his time with Bengaluru FC, Chhetri secured the I League title twice in 2014 and 2016. He also lifted the Federation Cup trophy twice in 2015 and 2017, followed by winning the Super Cup in 2018. In 2019, Bengaluru FC clinched their maiden ISL title, and last season they emerged victorious in the Durand Cup in 2022, while also reaching the final of the ISL.

Chhetri expressed his deep connection to the city, the club, and all those involved with Bengaluru FC. He emphasized the rarity and specialness of the strong bond he shares with them as a footballer. Chhetri expressed his gratitude and happiness, hoping that everyone associated with the club feels the same way about his contract extension.

Having made 250 appearances for Bengaluru FC to date, Chhetri has scored an impressive 116 goals and has been the top scorer for the Blues in seven seasons.
