New Delhi, 2nd March 2023: The Supreme Court of India has announced that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and the Leader of the Opposition will be a part of the selection panel for the appointment of election commissioners in the country.

The announcement came after a petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking changes in the current selection process of the election commissioners. The petition stated that the current process did not provide for adequate representation of all political parties in the selection panel.

The Supreme Court, after hearing the petition, ruled that the CJI and the Leader of the Opposition would be a part of the selection panel along with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Law and Justice. This decision will ensure that all major political parties have a say in the selection of election commissioners.

The election commissioners are responsible for overseeing elections in the country and ensuring that they are conducted in a free and fair manner. The commissioners are appointed by the President of India on the recommendation of the selection panel.

The selection of election commissioners has been a topic of controversy in the past, with allegations of bias and favouritism. The inclusion of the CJI and the Leader of the Opposition in the selection panel is expected to bring more transparency and fairness to the process.

The Supreme Court’s decision has been welcomed by various political parties, who have called it a step towards ensuring a more democratic and inclusive process of selecting election commissioners.
