Swargate-Katraj Pune Metro Expansion: Two Additional Stations Push Project Cost to Rs 3,637 Crore
Pune, 19th February 2025: The planned extension of the Swargate-Katraj underground Metro corridor, with the addition of two new stations, is set to raise the overall project cost by ₹683.11 crore. Initially estimated at ₹2,954.53 crore, the cost has now surged to ₹3,637.6 crore following the inclusion of stations at Balajinagar and beyond Market Yard.
The revised budget has been approved by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which will now contribute ₹250 crore instead of its earlier commitment of ₹181 crore—an increase of ₹68 crore.
The Swargate-Katraj Metro extension received central government approval in August 2024. Currently, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) is in the process of finalizing a contractor for tunneling and other key construction tasks. Preliminary surveys have been completed, and authorities expect on-ground construction to begin in the coming months.
Regular commuters and local representatives are urging authorities to expedite the project, as the construction timeline is estimated to be at least four and a half years.
The original Detailed Project Report (DPR), approved by the central government, had planned for three stations—Market Yard, Parvati, and Katraj. However, Pune MP Muralidhar Mohol and Parvati MLA Madhuri Misal advocated for additional stations at Balajinagar and another location beyond Market Yard to enhance commuter access.
“These two stations will significantly improve Metro connectivity for a larger section of Pune residents. Many commuters rely on road transport in these areas, and this move will help decongest traffic,” said MP Mohol.
MLA Misal echoed similar sentiments, adding, “The goal is to make the Metro more accessible to citizens, especially those in high-density residential and commercial zones. The surveys for both stations are complete, and the final alignment will be decided before tunneling begins.”
Since the project involves underground construction, authorities will need to finalize station locations before initiating tunnel excavation.
Commuters hope the project stays on track, as traffic congestion on this stretch remains a persistent issue.
