Tamhini Ghat Closed for All Traffic: National Highway 753F Paud-Mangaon Route Shut Indefinitely Due to Severe Flooding
Mulshi/Pune, 6th July 2026: The Pune district administration has suspended all vehicular traffic on National Highway 753F, which connects Paud in Pune district to Mangaon in Raigad district via the scenic Tamhini Ghat.
The complete closure became effective on Sunday, July 5, 2026, starting at 9:00 PM, and will remain in place until further orders. This emergency measure was taken following intense, non-stop rainfall over the weekend, which caused a local stream to overflow onto the highway, creating extremely hazardous driving conditions.
According to an official order issued by Vijaykumar Chobe, the Tehsildar and Taluka Executive Magistrate of Mulshi (Paud), Mulshi Taluka has been battered by relentless, extremely heavy downpours for the past two days. The excessive rain caused a nearby stream (nullah) to overflow, sending a heavy torrent of water rushing across the road near the Dongarwadi Plus Valley Point, located at Kilometer marker 59/200, just before the entrance to the Tamhini Ghat.
The decision to close the highway was prompted by a formal communication from the Executive Engineer of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Pune, sent earlier on July 5. The MSRDC warned that allowing vehicles to navigate the flooded highway was highly dangerous. Relying on this warning, as well as weather advisories from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai and guidelines under the Disaster Management Act of 2005, the local administration moved swiftly to issue the shut-down order.
The order directs the Senior Police Inspectors of both Paud (in Pune district) and Mangaon (in Raigad district) to immediately enforce the closure on their respective sides of the highway. All types of vehicles, including private cars, two-wheelers, and heavy commercial trucks, are strictly prohibited from using the route until the water recedes and the road is declared safe for transit. Authorities have emphasized that the measure is of paramount importance to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents in the landslide-prone and flood-affected ghat section.
Travellers planning to commute between Pune and the Konkan region via the Tamhini Ghat are strongly advised to defer their journeys or seek alternative routes. Local disaster management units and police departments remain on high alert as heavy rain continues to lash the region.
