Mumbai, 3rd September 2025: City buyers often choose small SUVs or crossovers. Two top picks are Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Fronx. One is a more rugged compact SUV. The other is a stylish crossover. This article compares both. We look at price, mileage, interior, features and who should pick which.

1. Price and buying cost

The Tata Nexon price (ex‑showroom) ranges from ₹8 lakh to around ₹15 lakh. On‑road price in cities goes from approx. ₹9 lakh to ₹17 lakh depending on variant and location. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx price (ex‑showroom) spans ₹7.54 lakh to ₹13.06 lakh in its petrol and CNG versions. On‑road price is about ₹8 lakh to ₹15 lakh in major cities. So, Fronx tends to cost less. Nexon is more expensive, especially in diesel or top trims. However, between the two, the Nexon is an older model, built upon a platform that’s almost a decade old. It finds its roots at the Indica hatchback from over two decades ago. That said, it has received many updates in terms of styling and features to stay relevant to the current times.

2. Mileage and fuel types

Tata Nexon mileage in the test cycle is around 17 to 22 kmpl for petrol and diesel. It’s over 20 km/kg for CNG in Tata Nexon CNG variants. Maruti Suzuki Fronx mileage is approx 21-23  kmpl, for petrol and over 28.5 km/kg for CNG in same conditions. Thus, Fronx gives high fuel efficiency, especially its CNG. Nexon is slightly less economical in petrol and diesel.

3. Engine and variants

Tata Nexon comes in petrol, diesel and also as Nexon EV. It has CNG in some variants. It offers both manual and automatic. Maruti Fronx comes in petrol and petrol with CNG only. No diesel or EV models have been launched yet. Automatic (AMT) is only available in petrol trims. Urban buyers who want CNG economy may consider Fronx. However, the Nexon gives more power options and electric choice.

4. Interior and comfort

Tata Nexon interior is roomy and sufficiently feature-laden. It has a high seating position, good headroom and wide cabin. Features include touchscreen, AC vents, safety tech in higher trims. Fronx interior is more stylish and modern. It has a compact cabin based on Baleno platform. It offers touchscreen infotainment, rear AC vents and comfortable seats. Both the cars are 5‑seaters.  If you need more space and SUV feel, Nexon wins. If you want a more upmarket cabin that feels more modern and better built, Fronx is a better option.

5. Urban usability

Nexon is bigger and heavier. It handles potholes well. I But it is harder to park in tight spaces. Also, it has enough body roll for a vehicle of its size. The higher centre of gravity even makes it loose composure easily, especially at high speeds. The Fronx is smaller and lighter. It uses less fuel in stop‑go traffic. It feels nimble in narrow lanes. It’s also more stable at high speeds and a much more confident handler. That makes it great for city as well as occasional highway driving.

6. Safety and build quality

Tata Nexon has strong safety ratings. Tests by Global NCAP in 2024 show 5‑star for adult and child safety in updated protocol. Fronx safety rating from Global NCAP is not available. However, it has achieved a 4-star safety rating in the Japan NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash tests. This rating applies to the made-in-India Japanese Fronx model tested under the 2024 protocols. The Indian version is equipped with six airbags, ABS, and ISOFIX

7. Ownership cost and maintenance

Tata Nexon service costs are low. Spare parts are widely available. Tata offers good warranty and service network. However, long term reliability is a huge hit-or-miss. Many owners have recorded poor parts quality and, in some cases, even related breakdowns. Also, Tata Motors’ service network is neither as wide as Maruti’s nor as customer-friendly.
Maruti Fronx benefits from Maruti’s large service network. Parts are cheap and expected upkeep is low. CNG running cost is very low for Fronx.

8. Buyer profiles – who should choose what?

Choose Tata Nexon if:

  • You want SUV look and ride height.
  • You may consider Tata Nexon EV or CNG.
  • You want NCAP-certified crash protection.
  • You carry occasional extra luggage.
  • You don’t mind a slightly higher price and fuel cost.

Choose Maruti Suzuki Fronx if:

  • You want a better handling vehicle that’s more confident at high speeds.
  • You want the best mileage in the category, especially from CNG.
  • You value low running cost, easy maintenance and long term reliability.
  • You want a stylish, compact crossover.

Final verdict

For urban buyers who want a compact, efficient crossover, Maruti Suzuki Fronx is a good pick. It gives excellent mileage, low running cost, and ease of ownership. If you want SUV feel, higher safety ratings, more engine options or plan to go electric (Tata Nexon EV), then Tata Nexon is a better choice. However, it’s pricier and often suffers from reliability issues.
