Pune, 27th March 2025: The arrival of summer brings with it the much-anticipated mango season, a time when Pune’s markets are filled with the rich aroma of the ‘King of Fruits.’ Among the varieties available, Devgad Alphonso (Hapus) and Ratnagiri Alphonso hold a special place in the hearts—and taste buds—of Punekars. Grown along the Konkan coast, these mangoes are prized for their distinctive taste, creamy texture, and unmistakable fragrance.

A Taste Like No Other
The Alphonso mango, known for its velvety smooth pulp and rich sweetness, is a favorite across India and internationally. The Devgad Alphonso, though smaller in size, is packed with flavor, making it a premium choice. “If the mango is completely orange inside when cut, then it’s a genuine Hapus,” explains Jituraj Kamble, a local mango seller. He warns that mangoes from other states, including Karnataka, are sometimes repackaged and sold as Devgad or Ratnagiri Alphonso. “If it appears yellow inside, it’s not the authentic variety,” he adds.

Pune’s Mango Markets Heat Up
With the first batch of Devgad Alphonso hitting Pune’s Grahak Peth and other local markets in late February, mango lovers have been quick to make their purchases despite the high prices. Initially, the cost per dozen ranges between ₹1,800 and ₹2,000, says Kaluram Ghadge, a fruit vendor at Grahak Peth. “As supply increases, the prices drop. Mid-season rates usually settle around ₹1,200-₹1,400, and by the end of the season, they can go down to ₹900-₹1,000 per dozen,” he notes.

Global Demand for Devgad Alphonso
These premium mangoes are not only cherished in India but are also highly sought-after abroad. “The demand for Devgad Alphonso in America and Europe is huge. Exporting starts in April and peaks through June,” says Vishal Deshmukh, a Pune-based businessman involved in mango exports. While Devgad mangoes are considered more premium, Ratnagiri Alphonso offers an excellent balance of sweetness and slight tanginess, making them a preferred choice for many.

A Summer Tradition in Pune
For Pune residents, the mango season is more than just about eating fruit—it’s an experience. Housewife Kalpana Joshi shares, “Ratnagiri mangoes have a refreshing and fruity taste along with their sweetness. Their cool, juicy pulp is the perfect relief in the summer heat.”

मौसम: रसाळ आंब्याचा…

As one strolls through Pune’s bustling fruit markets, the golden glow of Devgad and Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes is impossible to miss. Whether for their rich flavor, smooth texture, or nostalgic summer memories, these mangoes remain a staple of the season. For every mango lover in Pune, this is the time to indulge in nature’s sweetest gift.
