New Delhi, 28th April 2025: Mohanlal’s latest Malayalam thriller Thudarum continues its box office dominance, collecting ₹10.89 crore on its third day (Sunday), taking its total India collection to ₹24.58 crore within three days. The film, directed by Tharun Murthy, has outperformed Bollywood releases Ground Zero and Phule, which struggled to cross ₹2 crore collectively on the same day.

The suspense crime drama, featuring Mohanlal as a former stuntman-turned-taxi driver entangled in a drug-related mystery, opened with ₹5.24 crore on Friday, followed by ₹8.45 crore on Saturday. Its global earnings stand at ₹41.05 crore, making it the fourth-largest Malayalam opener overseas, surpassing Mohanlal’s 2019 blockbuster Lucifer in international markets. IMDb has rated the film 8.5, reflecting strong audience approval.

Trade analysts attribute the film’s success to its gripping narrative and Mohanlal’s performance. A Kochi-based exhibator, Rajeev Nair, stated, “The word-of-mouth hype mirrors Drishyam-level excitement. Family audiences are driving repeat viewings.” The film’s plot, revolving around a cab driver falsely implicated in a drug case, has drawn comparisons to Drishyam for its suspenseful twists.

Thudarum has particularly resonated in Gulf countries, contributing significantly to its overseas revenue. Industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai noted, “Mohanlal’s pan-India appeal is evident, with the film outperforming Hindi releases in multiplexes.” Co-starring Arjun Ashokan and Shobhana, the film’s minimalist promotion strategy relied on its cast and screenplay to attract viewers.

While Thudarum thrives, Imran Hashmi’s Ground Zero and Marathi film Phule remain underwhelming, with single-day collections below ₹1 crore. The contrast highlights Mohanlal’s enduring star power and the Malayalam industry’s growing pan-India footprint.

With no major releases next week, Thudarum is expected to sustain its momentum. Producer Antony Perumbavoor said, “We aimed for organic growth through storytelling, and the numbers validate our approach.” The film’s success reinforces Mohanlal’s status as a pan-Indian superstar, capable of rivaling Bollywood’s box office heavyweights.
