Trademark: Pune Court Issues Notice To Serum Institute Over Use Of ‘Covishield’ Name

Pune, January 6, 2021: The Pune District Court has issued a notice to vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India (SII) over the use of the brand name ‘Covishield’ after another company filed a petition over trademark issue. Nanded-based Medcutis Biotech has approached the court. SII has named its Coronavirus disease (COVID19) vaccine as ‘Covishield’.

As per the petition filed by Archana Ashish Kabra, director of Medcutis Biotech, additional sessions judge AV Rotte issued a notice to Serum Institute.

According to Kabra’s lawyer Aditya Soni, Medcutis Biotech is using the name ‘Covishield’ for its products since May 2020. Medcutis Biotech produces hand sanitizers, antiseptic liquid etc. “Serum Institute should use another name for its Corona vaccine”, Adv Soni said.
