Pune, 30th August 2023: The Indian Railways recently proclaimed the successful operation of a train achieving a remarkable speed of 130 km/h on the Pune-Daund section. However, it’s crucial to highlight that within the 76-kilometer span, the train managed to cover a mere 18 kilometers at this high velocity. The historic feat was accomplished by the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Visakhapatnam Express, identified by its train number 18520.

The train’s accomplishment in reaching the maximum permissible speed of 130 km/h on this route was made possible through a series of track upgrades and technical enhancements. Railway officials reported that the train commenced its journey from Pune at 10:42 AM and reached Daund at 11:43 AM, thus reducing travel time by 5 minutes over the 76 km stretch.

However, experts have since raised concerns regarding the train’s ability to sustain the 130 km/h speed for only 18 km of the entire segment, as covered in a report by Navbharat Hindi News Paper.

Pune Railway Division’s PRO Ramdas Bhise told Punekar News, “There are some challenges on the 76 km stretch between Pune and Daund. We are addressing these challenges to ensure seamless 130 km/h travel across the entire span.”

He also expressed the need to verify the accuracy of claims that the train covered just 18 km at a speed of 130 km/h.

“Currently, trains operate at varying speeds of 110 km/h and 130 km/h on the same tracks.”

The transition to 130 km/h speeds isn’t limited to just one train. All 22 pairs of trains featuring Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches on the Pune-Daund route are set to gradually transition to the higher speed. Previously, all trains traversed this section at 110 km/h.

However, questions linger about the operational feasibility of maintaining different speeds on the same tracks. Specifically, if one track accommodates speeds of 110 km/h, the compatibility of operating a train at 130 km/h behind it remains uncertain.
