Pune, 19th May 2026: The Pune City Police detained two Bangladeshi women and a minor at Pune International Airport while they were allegedly attempting to flee to Guwahati in Assam.

The action was carried out jointly by the Khadak Police Station, airport police and CISF personnel following a tip-off that some Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in Pune were planning to travel by air from Pune to Guwahati.

Police said a special drive against illegal Bangladeshi nationals residing within Pune city limits is currently underway on the instructions of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Acting on intelligence inputs received through informers, teams led by Senior Police Inspector Shashikant Chavan rushed to Pune airport and laid a trap along with airport police and CISF personnel.

During the operation, police detained three persons identified as Shahinur Begum Sheikh (42), Shagurika Begum Yulia Sheikh (28), and a minor boy.

Preliminary investigation revealed that all three are residents of Bigarat district in Bangladesh. Police said they had arrived in Pune from Solapur and were preparing to board a flight to Guwahati when they were intercepted.

Officials said verification of the documents found with the trio is underway. Police are also probing the route through which they entered India, the duration of their stay and whether they have links with any other persons or networks operating in the region.

For further investigation and legal action, the three have been handed over to the Vimannagar Police Station.

Police officials said that over the last 10-and-a-half months, Pune Police have detained 97 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly staying illegally in the city. Authorities said the special verification drive has now been intensified across different parts of Pune.
