Two Gold Smugglers Arrested on Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express, 9 kg Gold Worth Rs 5.4 Crore Seized

Pune, 14th October 2023: On October 12, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at Nagpur station apprehended two suspects with approximately 8.5 to 9 kg of smuggled gold, valued at around Rs 5.4 crore, on board train 12130 Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express.

Upon receiving the tip, RPF Nagpur personnel, led by R.L. Meena, immediately relayed the information to their superiors—Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Nagpur (Sr DSC/Nagpur) and Assistant Security Commissioner (ASC) Nagpur.

As per the directives of the Sr DSC, a special team comprising eight RPF personnel was formed to carry out the operation. They included Head Constable Madan Lal, Constables Mohan Lal Dewangan, Amol Chahajgune, Sachin Sirsat, Sub-inspector Mukesh Rathore, Constable Jasvir Singh, and Lady Constable Sirin.

Assisted by Inspector Crime Investigation Branch (CIB)/Nagpur and three DRI officers, the team conducted a search on the train. They identified two suspects—Rahul and Baluram—seated on berths 28 and 24 in coach S-4, carrying two bags filled with gold biscuits weighing between 8.5 to 9 kg.

The suspects were detained at Nagpur railway station on platform number 8 and subsequently taken to the DRI office for further legal proceedings. The confiscated gold, valued at approximately Rs 5.4 crore, is now in the custody of DRI officials. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to arrest other individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
