UGC Warns Students Against Fake Universities, Invalid Degrees

New Delhi, 25th March 2025: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning to students and parents, urging them to be cautious while seeking admissions, as some institutions are illegally awarding degrees without UGC recognition. Any degrees obtained from such institutions will be deemed invalid for higher education or employment.
In response to the rising cases of fake universities and fraudulent degrees, the UGC has been consistently publishing lists of such institutions and advising the public to remain vigilant. As the new academic session begins, the UGC has reiterated its warning and released updated guidelines.
The UGC Act of 1956 states that only universities and institutions established by state, central, or provincial laws—or those granted special authorization—can legally award degrees. However, some organizations continue to violate these regulations, misleading students and parents. The UGC has made it clear that degrees from unrecognized institutions will not be accepted for further studies or job opportunities.
Before enrolling in any institution, students and parents should verify its legitimacy through the UGC’s official website. If any university is found violating UGC norms, complaints can be submitted via email at [email protected].
