Unstable Power Supply Disrupts Life in Pune; Citizens Suffer Amid Inconsistent Voltage, Appliance Damage
Pune, 28th July 2025: Large parts of Pune, including the central Peth areas, Swargate, Shivajinagar, Hingne, and Sinhagad Road, have been grappling with erratic power supply over the past two days. Residents are facing either low or high voltage electricity, leading to malfunctioning appliances, disrupted water supply, and inconvenience to senior citizens and families.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) has attributed the disturbances to technical issues caused by rain and claims that repair work is ongoing across affected zones.
Residents say that sudden voltage spikes and power cuts have caused major disruptions in daily life. “For the past two days, there has been a sudden power outage, and sometimes the voltage is extremely high. Our fridge items are spoiling, and the water motor has stopped working, creating a water shortage. Using lifts has become risky for senior citizens,” said Niranjan Kache, a resident of the Peth area.
In another incident in Ambegaon Budruk, some elderly residents were reportedly stuck in an elevator due to a sudden power outage. “The power supply has been fluctuating since Saturday. We are afraid to step out because of lift failures. Our household appliances keep shutting down, and normal life has become difficult,” said resident Suresh Godbole.
According to MSEDCL, monsoon-related issues often cause temporary faults in the power network. “Maintenance and repair works are being conducted regularly for uninterrupted power supply,” the company said in a statement.
However, citizen activists are not convinced. “Frequent power outages in a metro like Pune clearly indicate MSEDCL’s failure in conducting timely maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. Residents continue to suffer due to this negligence,” said Vivek Velankar, president of Sajag Nagarik Manch.
As complaints mount, citizens are demanding that the power utility take concrete steps to stabilize electricity supply and ensure proper voltage regulation to prevent appliance damage and safeguard lives.
