New Delhi, 10th May 2023: The highly anticipated outcome of the Maharashtra power struggle, which has captured the nation’s attention, is on the horizon. The Supreme Court is likely to announce its verdict on Thursday, determining the fate of the Shinde-Fadnavis government.

The decision will decide whether the government will continue or be replaced, and whether 16 MLAs will face disqualification or be deemed qualified. As a result, tomorrow holds the potential for a significant event.

The impending verdict on the Maharashtra power struggle has engrossed not just the state but the entire country. Following the conclusion of the power struggle hearing on March 16, the Constitution Bench, led by Chief Justice Dhananjaya Chandrachud, reserved its judgment. The awaited announcement date has now been unveiled, confirming that the result will be declared on Thursday.

As the power tussle unfolded in Maharashtra, Deputy Speaker Narahari Jirwal issued notices to 16 MLAs aligned with Shinde, citing anti-defection and anti-party activities. The MLAs were given a two-day window to respond to the notices. In response, the 16 MLAs approached the Supreme Court, challenging the validity of the notices. The Shinde group referred to past cases, asserting that action cannot be taken against the MLAs as no-confidence motions have been filed against the Deputy Speaker. However, the Legislative Assembly’s Deputy Speaker argued in court that the submitted no-confidence motion did not originate from a registered email and was subsequently rejected.

During the Supreme Court hearings on the disqualification of the MLAs, several crucial questions were raised. Did the MLAs violate the Anti-Party Activities and Defection Act? Can Narahari Jirwal be disqualified as an MLA if a no-confidence motion is filed against him? With the election of the Assembly Speaker, does Narahari Jirwal have the authority to make decisions concerning these MLAs? These crucial matters were extensively debated within the courtroom.
