Voter Registration Drive at Pune Pride Walk Empowers LGBTQIA+ Community

Shivajinagar, 4th June 2023: In a powerful show of support, the city of Pune came together to stand firmly behind the LGBTQIA+ community during a pride walk organized by the organization ‘Yutak.’
Dr. Shrikant Deshpande, the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra, emphasized the significance of acknowledging and addressing the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community for a meaningful democratic process.
Accompanied by Deputy Election Officer Bhausaheb Galande, Sub Divisional Officer Sneha Kisve-Devkate, Tehsildar Radhika Haval-Bartakke, and representatives of the LGBTQIA+ community and Yutak Sanstha, Dr. Deshpande encouraged attendees to register as voters during the pride walk event.
Dr. Deshpande underlined the importance of active participation from all segments of society in the democratic process. When members of the LGBTQIA+ community join the march and bring forth their concerns, it is crucial for society to support and empower them. He emphasized the need for society to prioritize education and employment opportunities for the community. Dr. Deshpande emphasized that every section of society should actively participate in the voting process to strengthen democracy as a whole.
The rally took place along the route from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden on JM Road to Deccan Bus Stand, passing through Good Luck Chowk, FC Gate, Shirole Road, and concluding back at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden. Alongside the pride walk, the event also promoted voter registration, encouraging individuals to exercise their democratic rights.
During the rally, members of the LGBTQIA+ community had the opportunity to raise their concerns and issues before society, fostering dialogue and understanding. The event served as a platform to amplify their voices and advocate for equality and inclusivity.
