Dharamshala, 22nd October 2023: In an engaging contest at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala, India secured a thrilling victory over New Zealand by four wickets with two overs to spare. This resounding win marks only India’s second triumph against New Zealand in ICC tournaments during the 21st century.

Winning the toss, India opted to field first. Suryakumar Yadav replaced the injured Hardik Pandya, and Mohammad Shami stepped in for Shardul Thakur. While New Zealand’s stand-in captain, Tom Latham, confirmed Tim Southee’s availability, Southee did not feature in the lineup. Batting first, New Zealand faced a challenging start, with Devon Conway contributing no runs, and Will Young failing to make a significant impact. Rachin Ravindra’s impressive performance saw him score 75 off 87 balls before being caught by Shubman Gill off Mohammad Shami’s delivery. Daryll Mitchell played a brilliant inning, amassing 130 runs in 127 balls before being caught by Virat Kohli, courtesy of Mohammad Shami’s delivery. With a valuable contribution from Glenn Phillips, New Zealand reached a competitive total of 273 runs.

From India’s bowling department, Mohammad Shami, making his return to the team, took an impressive 5-wicket haul in his 10 overs, conceding 54 runs. Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj each secured one wicket.

Chasing a target of 274 runs, India’s opening was strong, with Captain Rohit Sharma scoring 46 off 40 balls before being bowled out by Lockie Ferguson. Shubman Gill made a modest contribution to the innings. The match faced a small interruption due to fog in the HPCA Stadium, but it resumed without affecting the over count. The in-form Virat Kohli delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 95 runs in 104 balls before being caught by Glenn Phillips off Matt Henry’s delivery. Kohli narrowly missed his 49th ODI century, which would have tied him with the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI century record. Kohli also missed out on his second consecutive century in the tournament and the 79th overall by a mere five runs.

Both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul made modest contributions but were unable to hold their wickets. Suryakumar, filling in for the injured Pandya, failed to make any impact. Ravindra Jadeja remained not out, contributing 39 runs in 44 balls and played a pivotal role in India’s victory by four wickets with two overs remaining.

From New Zealand’s bowling attack, Lockie Ferguson claimed two wickets, while Trent Boult, Matt Henry, and Mitchell Santner each secured one wicket.

India’s next match is set against defending champions England at Ekana Sports City, Lucknow. Meanwhile, in the 22nd fixture of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan is scheduled to face Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai tomorrow.
