Lucknow, 29th October 2023: In a highly anticipated clash at the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, India emerged victorious over England by a commanding margin of 100 runs in a low-scoring encounter held at Ekana Sports City in Lucknow.

Despite the favourable conditions for spinners at the Lucknow stadium, the Indian team opted to remain unchanged, with only two spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, in their lineup. England won the toss and elected to field first.

India’s batting lineup, featuring the likes of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer, had a challenging day as they failed to make significant contributions. However, captain Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role, scoring 87 runs off 101 balls before being caught by Liam Livingstone off Adil Rashid’s delivery. KL Rahul added valuable runs with 39 off 58 balls before Jonny Bairstow caught him on a delivery from David Willey. Suryakumar Yadav, filling in for the injured Hardik Pandya, also made a useful contribution with 49 runs from 47 balls before being caught by Chris Woakes off David Willey’s delivery. The rest of India’s batting order struggled, resulting in a total of 229 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

In response, England faced a challenging target of 230 runs and struggled throughout their innings. Except for Liam Livingstone, who scored 27 runs from 46 balls before being given out leg-before-wicket by Kuldeep Yadav, no English batsman managed to surpass 20 runs. From India’s bowling attack, Mohammad Shami was the standout performer, claiming 4 wickets in his 7 overs while conceding only 22 runs. Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets, Kuldeep Yadav secured 2, and Ravindra Jadeja managed to dismiss one batsman.

With this convincing win, India now leads the points table with 12 points, surpassing all other teams in the competition. On the other hand, England, the defending champions and pre-tournament favourites, languish at the bottom of the table with only one win from their six games, having lost five matches in this edition of the World Cup.

The upcoming fixture in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 will feature Sri Lanka facing Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
