Hooghly, September 13, 2020: The body of a Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) worker was found hanging from a tree today in Hooghly, said police.

The cops said the body of BJP worker Ganesh Roy was found hanging from a tree near his village in Khanti in Goghat area. The BJP alleged that Ganesh was murdered by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), but the ruling party of the state has denied all the allegations.

It is being said that Roy was missing since Saturday evening. Police said the circumstances behind his death are being investigated. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh alleged that Roy was killed and his body was hung from the tree by TMC. He said that this was done in the middle of the night to spread panic among his party workers in the area.

BJP MP of Hooghly Lockett Chatterjee said that there is a need to stop this cruelty. She asked, “where are the champions of democracy and why are they silent on the killings of BJP workers in West Bengal?”

Police said that BJP workers had blocked the Gogat-Arambagh road for some time in protest against the incident.

Significantly, on 28 July, the body of a BJP booth president was found hanging in Haldia in East Midnapore district. Before that incident, BJP leader and MLA of Hemtabad Devendra Nath Ray’s body was also found hanging near his house in Uttar Dinajpur district. The family had alleged that TMC had murdered him but the ruling party again denied all the allegations and cited the post-mortem report as saying it was a case of suicide.

Over the years, the bodies of several BJP workers have been found hanging in various parts of the state.
