New Delhi, 10th December 2024: WhatsApp has unveiled new features aimed at enhancing the user experience, including a typing indicator update and a voice message transcription tool. These additions are designed to make chatting more intuitive and engaging for its global user base.

The new ‘Typing Indicator’ feature offers a visual cue to show when someone is actively composing a message. In both individual and group chats, users will now see a “….” indicator along with the profile picture of the person typing. This addition makes conversations, particularly in group chats, more interactive and easier to follow when multiple people are responding simultaneously.

This feature builds on the existing typing indicator at the top of chat screens, providing an additional layer of convenience. Initially reported in October, the typing indicator was tested with select users before being rolled out to all WhatsApp users on iOS and Android. While the rollout has begun, it may take time for all users to receive the update.

Another noteworthy addition is the ‘Voice Message Transcription’ feature, which allows users to read the content of voice messages as text. This feature is particularly useful for users in situations where listening to audio isn’t feasible. Transcripts are generated locally on the device, ensuring that voice messages remain end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp clarified that the feature does not rely on external servers or AI, safeguarding user privacy.
