Yumthang Valley (North Sikkim), 27th November 2025: In a remote Himalayan stretch where travellers come seeking hot springs, wildflowers and the thrill of altitude, the Indian Army has stepped in to help the people of Yumthang shape their own adventure-tourism future. The force has handed over specialised high-altitude gear to local residents, giving a major boost to a community-run tourism initiative in the valley.

The equipment package, comprising tents, climbing and safety gear, cooking sets and essential high-altitude support tools, will enable villagers to organise well-structured trekking and camping experiences. With nearly 20–25 tourists arriving every day, the community now plans to develop small-scale adventure camps managed by trained local youth.

Pema Dorjee, Pipon of the Lachung Dzumsa, who is leading the initiative, said the support was a game-changer for the valley’s young residents. “This assistance helps our youth handle adventure activities confidently and responsibly. It strengthens our ability to welcome visitors safely while building sustainable livelihoods,” he said.

Army officials noted that the effort is part of a wider outreach programme in North Sikkim aimed at nurturing responsible tourism and fostering stronger ties with border communities. The initiative also aligns with ongoing projects such as Ranbhoomi Darshan, which seeks to highlight the region’s natural beauty and strategic significance to travellers.

With the Army’s backing, Yumthang’s community-led tourism model is set to evolve—offering visitors a safer, more organised way to explore one of Sikkim’s most captivating high-altitude landscapes.
