Why is Tamhini Ghat Becoming Dangerous? Will 95 Accidents Trigger a Wake-Up Call?
Mulshi, 28th November 2025: Tamhini Ghat, connecting Raigad and Pune districts, is a vital route between the Konkan region and Western Maharashtra. Known for its breathtaking scenery, the route becomes a major attraction during the monsoon — with misty Sahyadri mountains, lush green landscapes, and cascading waterfalls turning an ordinary journey into a memorable experience. Tourists from Pune and nearby areas often choose this road to travel towards Konkan.
However, the rising number of accidents over recent years has emerged as a serious concern. A road once admired for its natural beauty is now being flagged as one of the more dangerous travel routes.
According to available data, 95 accidents have been recorded in Tamhini Ghat over the past three years. Of these, 39 people have lost their lives, while 175 others have sustained injuries.
Recent incidents underline the gravity of the situation. On October 31 this year, a woman died after a landslide hit a moving car. In March, a head-on collision between an ST bus and a car claimed two lives. Earlier, a private bus carrying a wedding party met with an accident, killing five passengers.
Year-wise accident statistics reveal a sharp rise:
* 2023: 21 accidents, 6 fatalities, 30 injured
• 2024: 39 accidents, 18 fatalities, 101 injured
• 2025 (till October): 35 accidents, 15 fatalities, 44 severely injured
These figures clearly show an alarming upward trend.
How Do These Accidents Happen?
The increasing mishaps have sparked public debate over passenger safety along Konkan’s ghat routes. As most connecting roads pass through the steep Sahyadri range, they remain narrow, winding, and involve sudden ascents and descents.
Several risk factors contribute to accidents:
* Lack of protective safety barriers on many stretches
• Inadequate road signage, especially near sharp turns
• Absence of street lighting, leading to poor visibility at night
• Speeding and loss of control on steep or curved sections
In the dark, drivers often struggle to judge the road properly, making the journey particularly risky in night conditions.
