Winter Chill Set to Return in Pune, Maharashtra Braces for Below-Normal Temperatures After December 14
Pune, 12th December 2023: The winter chill is poised to make a comeback in Maharashtra towards the end of the week, as per the latest Extended Range Forecast (ERF) predicting a dip in minimum temperatures below normal post-December 14.
The ERF suggests that between December 14-27, minimum temperatures are expected to gradually decrease, becoming near normal or below normal by 1-3° across most parts of the country. However, exceptions include the western Himalayan region, northeastern states, and Gujarat, where temperatures are likely to remain above normal by 1-3°.
In Maharashtra, a drop in minimum temperatures is anticipated during December 16-17, according to Anupam Kashyapi, Head of the Weather Forecasting Division at IMD, Pune. Kashyapi explained, “We anticipate the northerly wind component penetrating into most of Maharashtra during that period. Currently, the state is experiencing mostly southeasterly winds, characterized by moisture and warmth, causing minimum temperatures to be significantly above normal. These winds originate from the Bay of Bengal via the southern peninsula and will continue to influence the state until December 16-17, after which the northerly wind component is expected.”
“The resulting decline in night temperatures to below normal levels (by 2-3°) is likely in most of the state except north Madhya Maharashtra,” added Kashyapi.
This dip in night temperatures is also expected in Pune. As of Monday, the minimum temperature in Pune was more than 4° above normal.
