Wipro Lays Off 452 Freshers; States ‘Poor Performance’ As Reason

Bengaluru, 21st January 2023: The IT giant Wipro announced that it had fired 452 freshers to whom it had extended offers

In a statement, a Wipro spokesperson said, “We had to let go of 452 freshers after they performed poorly in assessments repeatedly, even after training. At Wipro, we take pride in holding ourselves to the highest standards. In line with the standards we aim to set for ourselves, we expect every entry-level employee to have a certain level of proficiency in their designated area of work.”

The corporation explained that assessments are part of the evaluation process and are used to match personnel with the organization’s and client’s business objectives.

“This systematic and comprehensive performance evaluation process triggers a series of actions such as mentoring and retraining and in some cases separation of certain employees from the company,” said the statement.

After hiring 600 new employees, Wipro’s total headcount decreased by 435 during the third quarter of FY23. For the fiscal year 2024, the corporation stated after the results that it would continue to hire from campuses.

Instead, the corporation has been in the news because freshmen onboarding has been delayed. According to sources, the corporation acknowledged there had been delays in onboarding after the results were announced, but they would still honour all of their previous commitments.

In the quarter that concluded in December, Wipro’s attrition rate decreased from 23 per cent in the prior quarter to 21.2 per cent on a year-over-year basis.
