With Tanker Bills Mounting, Politicians Seek Water Tax Waiver For Pune Residents
Pune, 30th October 2026: With weekly water cuts forcing residents to spend thousands of rupees on private tankers, a section of political leaders has demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) waive water tax to ease the financial burden on households.
Former standing committee chairperson Ashwini Kadam said residents were being hit by additional expenses amid rising inflation, while leader of opposition Nilesh Nikam backed the demand, calling for wider relief measures to tackle the crisis.
However, PMC officials said a water tax waiver would require approval from the general body and standing committee, as it involves a policy decision and cannot be implemented administratively.
The city introduced weekly water cuts from October 15 due to lower dam storage compared to the same period last year. Officials said the restrictions have resulted in an estimated 13% reduction in supply.
