With The Approval From The Central Government, Soon There Will Be 34 Judges In The Supreme Court, Justice Pardiwala Can Become The Next Chief Justice of India

New Delhi, 6th May 2022: The Supreme Court will soon have 34 judges (including the Chief Justice). The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Gujarat High Court Justice Jamshed B Pardiwala as judges in the Supreme Court. The maximum sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 34.

 

If the Central Government accepts the recommendation, then Justice Pardiwala will also become the Chief Justice of the country in future. Justice Pardiwala will be the fourth person from the Parsi community to become a judge of the apex court. Pardiwala will be the second judge from the minority community to become a Supreme Court judge in the last five years. Justice Pardiwala completed his graduation from JP College, Valsad. He became a member of the Gujarat Bar Council in 1994.

 

Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia will be the second judge to be elevated from the Uttarakhand High Court to the top court. Before the Gauhati High Court, Justice Dhulia has been a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court. He belongs to a remote village in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. His grandfather Bhairav Dutt Dhulia was a freedom fighter. Justice Dhulia is a student of Sainik School Lucknow. He is a graduate of Law from Allahabad University. He became a member of the Allahabad High Court Bar in 1986. Justice Dhulia is the brother of film director Tigmanshu Dhulia.

 

In a meeting of the Collegium chaired by Chief Justice NV Ramana, it was decided to send these names to the Center for approval. The other members of the collegium are senior justices UU Lalit and AM Khanwilkar, justices DY Chandrachud and justices L Nageswara Rao. This year the country will see three Chief Justices. Current Chief Justice NV Ramana will retire on August 26. After this, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will become the Chief Justice. Justice DY Chandrachud will become the Chief Justice in November after Justice Lalit retires. Justice Chandrachud will have a tenure of about two years.
