Woman Allegedly Driven To Suicide After Harassment Over Cooking During Menstruation; Family Alleges Murder

Jalgaon, 3rd May 2025: In a deeply disturbing incident, a married woman from Kinod village in Jalgaon district died by suicide, allegedly after prolonged harassment by her in-laws. The woman, Gayatri Koli, reportedly hanged herself at her residence after being taunted and mentally tortured for not cooking during her menstrual cycle. Her maternal family has accused her mother-in-law and sister-in-law of murder, citing visible marks and injuries on her body.
Gayatri, originally from Chopda taluka, had been married and residing in Kinod village. According to her brother, Sagar Koli, Gayatri had been facing continuous demands for money from her in-laws for several months. He claims she was subjected to verbal abuse and physical assault over trivial issues. The harassment intensified after she refrained from cooking during her period, a decision that allegedly led to mental abuse and violence from her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Following her death, Gayatri’s body was taken to a government hospital. Upon learning of this, her grieving brother and aunt rushed to the district hospital, where they publicly accused the in-laws of foul play. They alleged that the marks on Gayatri’s body suggested she had been strangled and murdered rather than dying by suicide.
The local police have registered a case against the in-laws at the Jalgaon Taluka Police Station under charges of abetment to suicide. Preliminary police investigations indicate that financial pressure and mental harassment may have led to the tragedy. However, with allegations of murder from the victim’s family, a deeper inquiry is underway. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Gayatri Koli’s death.
