Kullu/Pune, 7th February 2024: The bodies of Abhinandan Gupta from Pathankot, Punjab, and Pranita from Pune, Maharashtra, were recovered in a forest near Billing in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district on Tuesday. The two had gone missing during a snow hike in the wilderness near Billing on Sunday afternoon.

The incident prompted a swift response from the authorities, as Gupta’s friends filed a missing report at Bir Police Station when the duo failed to return from their hike, and Gupta’s phone became unreachable. A search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched on Monday, but no results were obtained.

The operation resumed on Tuesday, culminating in the tragic discovery of the bodies in the afternoon. The preliminary assessment suggests that the couple’s feet may have slipped on the snow, resulting in injuries that proved fatal. The harsh and extremely cold conditions prevalent in the area could also have contributed to their untimely deaths.

A police officer stated, “Prima facie, it looks like their feet slipped on the snow, and they suffered injuries and died. Extremely cold conditions in the area could also have caused the deaths. We have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination, only after which can we confirm the exact cause of their death.”
