Pune, 18th May 2025: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has officially begun construction on the long-awaited Pune Ring Road project. Following the completion of the tendering process, work orders have been issued to nine selected companies, with the goal of completing the massive infrastructure project within two and a half years.

Aimed at easing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the 172-kilometre-long, 110-metre-wide ring road is one of the state’s most ambitious projects. It has been split into two sections — eastern and western — with a total estimated cost of ₹42,711 crore.

According to MSRDC officials, land acquisition for the project is nearly complete, with 99% acquisition done for the western section and 98% for the eastern portion. The revised proposal received administrative approval from the Maharashtra cabinet just before the enforcement of the state assembly election code of conduct.

The eastern section comprises seven phases, while the western section is divided into five. Construction work has commenced simultaneously at multiple key locations, including Wadebolhai, Khadakwasla, Sinhagad, Mulshi, Urse, Chakan, Hinjawadi, and Soratwadi.

“We have issued work orders to the nine companies as per government directives. The target is to complete construction within 2.5 years,” said MSRDC Superintending Engineer Rahul Vasaikar. “Initial work includes leveling hilly areas and building bridges and embankments to prepare for the monsoon. Other phases will progress in parallel.”

Vasaikar further noted that contractors failing to meet the deadline will face penalties and be required to pay compensation in accordance with government regulations.

Land Acquisition Status

For the eastern section, a total of 1,054.03 hectares has been acquired, covering private, government, and forest land. In the western section, 692.66 hectares have been secured. Only about six hectares remain to be acquired, and MSRDC has confirmed that the process to take possession of the remaining land is currently underway.
