Maharashtra: Alphonso Mango Season Ends Nearly a Month Early Due to Unseasonal Weather

Pune, 18th May 2025: The much-anticipated Alphonso mango season in the Konkan region has ended almost a month ahead of schedule, owing to erratic weather patterns. Traditionally, the Alphonso supply extends into the first week of June, but this year, arrivals are dwindling by mid-May.
At present, only limited quantities of Alphonso mangoes are reaching major fruit markets across Maharashtra, including Pune and Mumbai. The supply from Konkan — especially from Devgad, Ratnagiri, and Raigad — has already come to a halt, and arrivals are expected to cease completely within the next few days.
“The unusually warm winter and a sudden spike in temperatures during January disrupted the flowering cycle,” said Yuvraj Kachi, a mango trader at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard. “The first bloom suffered a significant setback as blossoms fell prematurely, reducing fruit setting and bringing down the overall yield by nearly 50%.”
This year’s season also started late, compounding the supply crunch. Currently, daily arrivals of Alphonso mangoes in Pune are limited to just 100 to 200 crates, compared to the peak season last year, when markets received 20,000 to 25,000 crates daily. Even on Akshaya Tritiya — traditionally a high-demand day — arrivals were only 8,000 to 10,000 crates.
Price Surge Amid Low Supply
With reduced production and early season closure, prices have surged significantly. In wholesale markets, the cost of a dozen Alphonso mangoes ranges from ₹300 to ₹600 depending on quality. Crates containing four to eight dozen mangoes are priced between ₹1,500 and ₹4,000.
As the Konkan season winds down, mangoes from Karnataka are now taking over market shelves and are expected to dominate supply until mid to late June, traders said.
