X Down Again: Second Outage in Days Disrupts Users in India, US and UK
New Delhi, 16th January 2026: Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, faced another major outage on Thursday night, disrupting services for thousands of users across India and several other countries. This marks the second major disruption on the platform in the past few days, raising concerns about its stability.
According to real-time outage tracking website Downdetector, the problems began around 8.26 pm. Within a short span, more than 5,000 users reported issues with accessing the platform. Users from the UK, the US, and major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata flagged problems, with many saying they were seeing blank screens while trying to open X.
Data from Downdetector showed that users were affected across multiple services. About 50 percent reported issues with the X mobile app, 39 percent faced problems accessing the website, and 11 percent complained of difficulties with their feed loading properly.
The latest outage comes just days after a similar disruption earlier this week, intensifying user concerns over the platform’s reliability. X has not yet issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage or providing a timeline for full restoration of services.
The platform had last faced a brief disruption on January 13, when users experienced trouble accessing the mobile app, website and server connections. That issue, however, was resolved within 15 minutes.
Separately, X has also announced new technical measures to restrict its AI chatbot, Grok, from generating explicit images of real people in regions where such content is illegal. The move follows strong backlash over the circulation of obscene deepfake content created using the tool.
In a post shared on its official safety handle, X said the restrictions apply to all users, including paid subscribers. The company also clarified that image generation and image-editing features through the Grok account on X will now be available exclusively to paid subscribers.
