Mumbai, 22nd April 2024: Amidst rising temperatures and soaring humidity levels, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane, signalling the onset of hot and muggy weather conditions expected to persist until Thursday. Despite temperatures reaching around 35 degrees Celsius, residents are preparing for discomfort exacerbated by the high humidity levels, as highlighted in The Indian Express.

Explaining the underlying reasons behind the sweltering conditions, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, pointed to the influx of moisture-laden westerlies as the primary factor. This influx significantly elevates humidity levels, intensifying the perception of heat among residents. While a full-fledged heatwave is not imminent, Mumbai can anticipate muggy conditions throughout the week, posing challenges for outdoor activities and daily commutes.

In response to the challenging weather conditions, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has implemented proactive measures to safeguard the health and well-being of workers involved in key projects across the city. These measures include establishing rest sheds at construction sites, distributing oral rehydration solution (ORS) to combat dehydration, and providing cool drinking water to prevent heat-related illnesses among workers braving the scorching sun.

Contractors overseeing these projects have been instructed to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours and equip workers with appropriate personal protective equipment to shield them from the blistering heat. Special attention is given to scheduling adequate rest intervals to prevent exhaustion and heatstroke, strategically aligning breaks with the hottest periods of the day.

Furthermore, authorities are closely monitoring weather updates to promptly respond to any developments and formulate effective emergency response plans in the event of heat-related emergencies. Initiatives such as deploying medical professionals and ambulances ensure swift assistance for individuals experiencing heat-related illnesses or emergencies, underscoring the city’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its residents and workers in challenging weather conditions.
