Zero Maintenance Cost for 5 Years: Pune’s Grand Tour Drives Massive Rural Road Revamp
Reported by Akshata Pawar
Pune, 9th December 2025: In a major infrastructure push ahead of the Pune Grand Tour, the Public Works Department (PWD) has launched extensive rural road upgrades across the district. The initiative, coupled with a five-year defect liability period, aims to ensure safe, durable, and maintenance-free roads in remote regions — without any additional government expenditure during the guarantee period.
Officials said that the cycling event has accelerated long-pending rural connectivity enhancements and is expected to leave a strong legacy of improved mobility and economic access for thousands of residents.
Upgrades Across Seven Talukas, Covering 150 Villages
The road improvements are being carried out in Mulshi, Maval, Haveli, Purandar, Bhor, Velhe (Rajgad), and Baramati. Around 150 villages will benefit from better road geometrics, enhanced safety features, and smoother travel.
PWD officials stated that the newly upgraded routes will comply with Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards and support both international cycling events and everyday transport of villagers.
International-Standard Features in Rural Roads
Key improvements include:
Minimum 5.5-metre road width for safer vehicle movement
Fresh resurfacing (overlay) to eliminate uneven surfaces
Clear white road markings and reflectors for night visibility
Signage, speed-control boards, and bridge protection mesh
Crash barriers on ghat roads to prevent fatal accidents
Shoulder correction to ensure both sides remain level with the road
Officials noted that frequent accidents in rural areas occur due to shoulder depressions, where vehicle wheels slip off the edge. Levelled shoulders will significantly reduce such mishaps.
Better Road Design for Smoother, Safer Travel
PWD engineers are working on geometric improvements, such as:
Smoother curves for improved vehicle control
Adjusted gradients for safe ascending and braking
Alignment enhancement to remove sharp bends
Roughness index assessment to deliver bump-free surfacing
The roads will also maintain optimal centre chamber levels for uninterrupted water flow, preventing early wear and tear. Cyclists and motorists are expected to enjoy a much more stable riding experience.

A Permanent Boost to Village Connectivity
Officials emphasized that the benefits of the project extend far beyond the Pune Grand Tour:
Enhanced access to markets, cities, and healthcare
Safer daily commuting for school and office travel
Major reduction in accident hotspots
Improved night driving with proper markings
Pothole-free mobility for years to come
“Upgraded connectivity directly impacts rural livelihoods and ensures that development reaches every village,” a senior PWD engineer said.
CTB Technology Introduced in Pune District
For the first time in Pune district, the Cement Treated Base (CTB) technique is being deployed in regions where soil strength is poor. This soil-stabilisation method boosts the road foundation, increases lifespan, and accelerates construction without compromising durability.
5-Year Defect Liability: Zero Extra Cost, Guaranteed Upkeep
A standout feature of the project is the long-term accountability placed on contractors:
Contractors to maintain road quality for five years at no extra government cost
Three years of cycling activity scheduled on these routes ensures high-standard upkeep
Responsibility includes repairs and protective micro-seal resurfacing
PWD explained that the 10 mm micro-seal top coat prevents cracks and potholes, keeping roads event-ready and commuter-friendly on a continuous basis.
A Road Legacy Beyond the Event
While excitement builds for the Pune Grand Tour, officials underline that the real victory lies in infrastructure development that prioritises rural safety, sustainability, and economic growth.
“This is not just an event-based upgrade — it is long-term value creation for our villages,” an official added, highlighting the transformation already visible across the district.
