Breastfeeding indicators can be improved with the participation of Obstetrics and Gynecologists – Dr Prashant Gangal

Pune ,12 August 2019 : Breastfeeding indicators including initiation rate and exclusive breastfeeding can be improved with the participation of Obstetrics and Gynecologists and therefore the Lactacon Conference 2019  organized by all obstetrics and gynecologists assumes significance opined Dr Prashant Gangal of Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India , Maharashtra. He was speaking at the Lactacon 2019 conference organized by Pune Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (POGS) in association with Study on Female Breast Committee, at Sheraton Grand Hotel on Sunday .
Dr.Dileep Walke President POGS  , Dr Mangala Wani Convenor of Lactacon 2019  , Dr Kundan Ingle Secretary POGS  , Dr Sneha Bhuyar Chairperson,  Study on Female Breast Committee , FOGSI , Dr Vaishali Chavan Executive  Vice President   POGS , Vaishali Korde Nayak Clinical Secretary, Purshottam Neurgoankar  Treasurer POGS and Dr Parag Binniwale Secretary ICOG were present on the occasion.
A special skit and dance to create awareness on importance of breastfeeding was organized on the occasion. The performance was in a form of “Matrutva Dhanya” a Breastfeeding dance . The song written by Dr Nishikant Shrotri  and sung by Dr Madhuri Kashyap was  choreographed by Mukta Dhavale  and performed by Dr Mangala Wani , Dr Charulatta Bapaye and Dr Savita Mehendale amongst others.
A CD of another song on the importance of breastfeeding – Kavachkundale Bala written by Dr Nishikatn Shrotri , sung by Dr Madhuri Kashyap and composed by music director Jagdish Kulkarni at Shivranjani  Studio was also released on the occasion . Dr Charulata Bapaye and Dr Vaijayanti Patwardhan were the compeers for the inaugural function
Dr Prashant Gangal added that the benefits of such training and workshops should reach every mother and child . Speaking about the ongoing flood situation, he said that priority should be given to new mothers and child while giving help in terms of food packets during natural calamities. We should ensure that mothers continue with breastfeeding so that the effect of diseases on children arising during and post flood situations can be reduced. He also said that NICUs should also encompass extra beds for mothers who should not be separated from their child.
Dr Sneha Bhuyar gave information about the projects she has been conducting in the drought prone areas of Yavatmal and the new projects she is undertaking on breast and cervical cancer by training the health workers on mass scale.
Lactation Consultant and Convenor of Lactacon 2019 Dr Mangala Wani POGS is constantly working working towards educating members on various topics concerning our society . About 600000 children and 100000 women world over  die due to effects of non breastfeeding which can be avoided . A joint effort between Government , private institutions and associations  is needed to transform our community and raise awareness.
Dr.Dileep Walke President POGS in his welcome address hailed the efforts of Dr Mangala Wani to connect with common people and said it is a learning curve for all of us.
The conference was organized to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week which is an annual event held every year from 1st to 7th August all over the world.
