37-Year-Old Pune Man Dies of GBS, Total Cases Reach 192

Pune, 11th February 2025: Maharashtra has recorded another fatality due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), bringing the total death toll in the state to seven.
A 37-year-old driver from Upper Indiranagar, Bibwewadi, succumbed to the illness at Kamala Nehru Hospital under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Sunday night (February 9). The state has now reported 192 cases of GBS, with Pune witnessing a significant rise, according to the Health Department.
The deceased first experienced weakness on January 31 and was taken to Bharti Hospital, Pune. His family later shifted him to Nipani for treatment on February 1, but as his condition worsened, he was moved to Bharti Hospital, Sangli. Despite further medical intervention, his health deteriorated, and he was transferred to Kamala Nehru Hospital, Pune, on February 5, where he passed away during treatment.
Health officials report that 192 cases have been recorded across Maharashtra so far. Of these, 167 patients have been formally diagnosed with GBS. In Pune, 39 cases have been reported within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, while 91 cases are from newly merged villages. Pimpri-Chinchwad has recorded 29 cases, and 25 cases have been reported from Pune’s rural areas. Additionally, eight cases have been detected in other districts of the state.
Among the affected patients, 48 are currently admitted to intensive care units (ICU), while 21 are on ventilator support. On a positive note, 91 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals across the state.
The disease has affected individuals across all age groups, with 42 cases reported in the 20-29 age bracket, followed by 28 cases in the 50-59 age group. Other age groups, including children, middle-aged individuals, and the elderly, have also been impacted.
With the rising number of cases, the Health Department has urged people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience sudden weakness, paralysis-like symptoms, or muscle fatigue. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely to contain the spread and ensure timely treatment.
