Pune, 24th January 2025: A total of 67 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, have been reported in Pune city and its surrounding areas. Of these, 14 patients, including two children, are currently undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital, with four of them in critical condition.

Speaking on the situation, Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of Sassoon Hospital, said, “Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a neurological disease that often begins with gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain or respiratory symptoms such as cough and cold. After five to seven days, patients may experience muscle weakness, making it difficult for them to walk or move their hands. In severe cases, breathing can become impaired, necessitating ventilator support.”

Dr. Pawar explained that the disease is diagnosed through a spinal fluid examination and a nerve conduction study. “Treatment should be initiated as soon as symptoms are noticed. The condition is treated using two main methods: plasma exchange and IVIG (Intravenous Immunoglobulin) injections,” he said, adding that most patients recover with timely and proper treatment.

Among the 14 patients admitted at Sassoon Hospital, eight are men and four are women, while two are children. “Most patients hail from Sinhagad Road, Kirkitwadi, and Dhankawadi, with two cases reported from outside Pune. While three adult patients and one child are in critical condition, the remaining patients are stable and receiving appropriate care,” said Dr. Pawar.

Highlighting the need for precautions, Dr. Pawar urged citizens to prioritize hygiene and safe drinking water. “People should boil water before consuming it, use water filters, and maintain proper hand and foot hygiene. If any symptoms of GBS appear, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention,” he emphasized.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated measures to curb the spread of the disease. Water sources in affected areas are being inspected, and safe drinking water is being supplied to residents.
