Maharashtra’s Free Education Push: Girls Dominate Professional Course Seats

Pune, 5th December 2024: The Maharashtra state government’s Higher and Technical Education Department has successfully implemented a free education scheme for girls this year, resulting in a significant increase in their enrollment in professional courses.

According to data from the State Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell), admissions for girls in professional courses rose by 44,198 compared to last year.

Under this scheme, girls from families with an annual income of ₹8 lakh or less are offered free education for degree, diploma, and postgraduate programs. This initiative has positively impacted admissions, particularly in fields like engineering, law, pharmacy, and management.

Last year, girls secured 1,29,263 seats out of 4,14,713 available in professional courses across the state. This year, the number of girls admitted surged to 1,73,434 out of 5,97,277 seats.

Courses like Engineering-Technology, Law, MBA, and MCA witnessed notable increases in the number of female students:
Engineering-Technology: 52,751 girls enrolled
MBA: 19,380
Education (B.Ed): 23,937
Three-Year Law: 7,135
Five-Year Law: 4,765
Direct Second-Year Pharmacy: 6,873
BCA-MCA Integrated Course: 8,781
Integrated Education (B.Ed-M.Ed): 206
