Pune, 30th December 2024: In an exclusive interview with Punekar News Consulting Editor Tikam Shekhawat, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar shed light on significant strides made in reducing crime across the city over the past year.

According to the Commissioner, overall crime cases have dropped by 10% compared to 2022 and 2023. Serious crimes, including attempted murders and other violent offences, have also witnessed a notable reduction exceeding 10%.

Addressing public safety concerns, Commissioner Kumar spoke about the recent gang rape incident at Bopdev Ghat, which highlighted the lack of police chowki and CCTV surveillance in such areas. To address these vulnerabilities, he revealed that a proposal has been submitted to the Maharashtra state government for the installation of CCTV cameras at 22 major ghats across the Pune city, including Bopdev Ghat. The proposed initiative, estimated at ₹80 crores, aims to bolster surveillance and deter criminal activities in these high-risk zones.

Speaking ahead of the New Year celebrations, Commissioner Kumar urged citizens to abide by all rules and regulations during the festivities. “We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly. Any violations of the law will be dealt with strictly to ensure public safety,” he said.

He also extended warm wishes for a safe and joyous New Year to Pune’s residents.
