Bangalore, 10th April 2025: Residents of Bangalore will now have to shell out more for essential items like milk, curd, and bottled water, as prices for these commodities have seen a notable hike starting this week. The increase has become a topic of discussion among city residents, with many expressing concerns over the rising cost of living.

The revised rates for milk and curd have been implemented by private suppliers as well as the state-run Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), which brands its products under the popular name Nandini. The price hike was attributed to increased production costs and inflationary pressures.

The new rates for Nandini milk have gone up by ₹2 per liter, making a half-liter pack of toned milk ₹23 and a full liter ₹46. The price of curd has also increased, with a half-liter pack costing ₹27 and a full liter priced at ₹54. Bottled water, another everyday essential, has seen its price jump, with 1-liter bottles now retailing at ₹25–₹30 depending on the brand and vendor. Officials from KMF stated that the decision was inevitable due to the rising operational costs, including transportation, energy, and packaging.

Suma N., a tech professional residing in JP Nagar, Bangalore, expressed her frustration, saying, “The price rise directly affects middle-class families like ours. Essentials like milk and curd are part of our daily routine, and such increases strain our budgets further.”

Private dairy suppliers in the city have also mirrored the price hike, citing similar reasons. According to an official from a leading Bengaluru-based dairy company, “We have been hit hard by inflation and rising fuel costs, which have significantly affected our distribution and production expenses.”

Consumers are now looking for alternative options, such as local vendors or smaller brands, to deal with the financial strain. However, government officials believe that the revised prices are necessary to help farmers and the dairy industry recover from previous losses incurred during the pandemic.

While residents are grappling with these hikes, experts suggest that sustainable measures and subsidies could help alleviate the burden on consumers while maintaining fair compensation for producers. The government is yet to respond to public concerns and has not indicated any plans to introduce financial relief measures for citizens affected by the rising costs.

The increase in prices of these essential commodities once again highlights the challenge of balancing the interests of both producers and consumers in a growing urban economy like Bangalore. Residents hope that future decisions will factor in their financial struggles.
