Reported by Amit Singh
Pune, 18th June 2025: The Pune–Satara railway doubling project has reached a major milestone with the completion and commissioning of the Shindawane–Ambale Ghat section. The 9.45 km stretch, part of the larger Pune–Miraj doubling initiative, was declared operational following an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Manoj Arora, on June 17, 2025.
The Goa Express became the first passenger train to operate on the newly doubled section, marking the formal commencement of train services over the route. This development effectively completes the doubling of the entire Pune–Satara segment.
The Shindawane–Ambale section was among the most challenging parts of the project due to difficult terrain and complex engineering requirements. Major infrastructure works in the section included:
- A 140-metre tunnel
- A ruling gradient of 1 in 100
- A critical viaduct with 13 spans of 30.5 metres each, tallest pier at 42 metres, LWR compliant
- Five major viaduct bridges with piers and abutments up to 18.3 metres using PSC and composite girders
- Movement of 30 lakh cubic metres of earth for embankment construction, with the highest embankment at 35 metres
- 20 lakh cubic metres of cutting with maximum depth of 25 metres
- 23 minor bridges
- Navigation of 16 sharp curves, including one with 6-degree curvature
With this commissioning, 258 km of the 279 km Pune–Miraj–Londa doubling project have now been completed.
Rajesh Kumar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, stated:”The successful completion of the Shindawane–Ambale section is a major achievement for Central Railway. The challenges posed by the difficult terrain and complex engineering were significant, but the hard work and commitment of our teams have led to this success.”
Ramdas Bhishe, Senior Divisional Operations Manager (Sr DOM), added:
“With the commissioning of this section, we are not only addressing the increasing demand for passenger and freight services but also enhancing the overall capacity and punctuality of the route.”
The Pune–Miraj–Londa doubling project is expected to ease congestion, improve operational efficiency, and boost the capacity for both passenger and freight trains.
