SpiceJet Flight from Goa to Pune Faces Mid-Air Scare as Window Panel Comes Loose
Pune, 3rd July 2025: Passengers aboard a SpiceJet flight from Goa to Pune experienced tense moments mid-air on Tuesday evening after a portion of the interior window panel was found dislodged during the journey.
The incident occurred on SpiceJet flight SG-1080, operated by a Bombardier Q400 aircraft. While the airline later clarified that the part in question was a non-structural interior trim, passengers on board said the incident sparked concern.
“It Shouldn’t Have Happened,” Says Passenger
“It was alarming,” said Aatish Mishra, who was seated in row 8 at the time of the incident. “There was a commotion toward the rear of the cabin. A mother and her child stood up suddenly. That’s when I noticed the window frame had come off. It looked like two or three layers of the panel were detached.”
Mishra emphasized that although there was no loss of cabin pressure, the issue raised concerns about aircraft upkeep. “There needs to be attention to cabin maintenance as well—not just the mechanical parts. Especially now, when air travel safety is under scrutiny,” he added, referencing recent aviation-related tragedies.
Airline Confirms Loose Interior Panel, Denies Safety Risk
In an official statement, SpiceJet confirmed the interior window frame had come loose during the flight. “A cosmetic trim component on one of our Q400 aircraft became dislodged mid-flight. This panel is fitted for shading purposes only and is not a structural element. There was no impact on cabin pressure or passenger safety,” the airline said.
The airline further stated that the outer pressure-bearing pane of the window remained intact and fully functional, ensuring continued pressurization and structural integrity of the cabin throughout the flight.
Aircraft Landed Safely, Repaired Before Next Departure
The flight, originally scheduled to depart Goa’s Mopa Airport at 5:20 pm, was delayed and took off around 7:00 pm, landing in Pune approximately at 7:53 pm. Mishra said the plane landed about 30 minutes after the panel issue was noticed, and the dislodged part remained in place during descent.
Following landing in Pune, the aircraft was inspected and the panel fixed. “The component was repaired in line with standard maintenance procedures,” an official confirmed.
The same aircraft was later cleared for its next scheduled flight to Jaipur, which took off at 8:58 pm and landed at 11:08 pm, after a complete check was conducted, according to airline sources.
No Safety Systems Compromised
“The Q400 is designed with multiple window layers, including a high-strength, pressure-resistant outer pane,” the airline noted in its follow-up statement. “Even in the rare event that a cosmetic frame comes loose, passenger safety remains uncompromised.”
The incident, though minor in nature, has once again put the spotlight on in-flight maintenance and quality control protocols, especially at a time when passengers are increasingly vigilant about aviation safety.
