Travel Trend: Monsoon Travel Sees an Off-Season Getaway Trend in GenZ and Millennials
Pune, 10th July 2025: Traditionally considered a low season for tourism, the Indian monsoon is now witnessing an unexpected surge in travel demand, especially among younger generations. With scenic landscapes, cooler temperatures, and the lure of discounted travel packages, Gen Zs and Millennials are redefining how and when they travel.
Data from leading travel platforms and agencies indicate a sharp increase in bookings for monsoon holidays, particularly among urban young professionals, couples, families, and emerging groups such as “frolleagues” — friends who are also colleagues. The shift reflects changing travel preferences that prioritize unique experiences, affordability, and shorter, more frequent breaks.
Travel trend trackers report a 46% spike in monsoon bookings this year, with Tier I cities accounting for nearly 78% of these trips. Most of these travellers fall within the 24–30 age group, opting for quick getaways lasting around three days, popularly dubbed as the “70-hour monsoon escape,” a contrast to the traditional workweek.
Despite the rising demand, accommodation rates have seen only a marginal uptick of 3%, while airfares have increased by about 13%, keeping travel largely accessible. Preferences vary: while hotel stays typically span two nights, flight bookings suggest longer vacations, averaging seven days.
There’s also a noticeable uptick in both spontaneous travel (with last-minute bookings up 14%) and advance planning (up 10%), indicating a broader shift toward flexible holiday behaviour.
Several factors are fueling this seasonal trend. With earlier travel plans delayed due to geopolitical uncertainties and unrest in certain destinations, a portion of the summer demand has spilled into the monsoon period. Emerging destinations such as Port Blair, Tirupati, Udaipur, Coimbatore, and Dehradun have seen a 25–30% year-on-year rise in flight bookings.
Simultaneously, travel companies are curating value-driven packages tailored for the monsoon, featuring experiences like backwater retreats, wildlife safaris, wellness stays, biking trails, and spiritual journeys — appealing to a wide range of travellers.
The increasing popularity of mini-cations and weekend breaks also highlights the evolving travel culture, particularly in Tier II and III cities, where interest is steadily growing. With airlines and hotels rolling out attractive monsoon offers, the season once regarded as off-limits is now being reimagined as an opportunity for memorable and affordable escapes.
