Narayan Peth, 29th August 2025: The city’s Ganesh festival is celebrated across the world for its grandeur, devotion, and creativity. While public mandals dazzle with elaborate tableaux and themes, household celebrations in Pune often surprise with their artistic ingenuity. This year, one such creation has stolen the spotlight, a miniature Lal Mahal painstakingly built by Narayan Peth resident Sanket Balkawade.

Balkawade’s model, measuring just 2.5 by 3 feet, recreates the grandeur of the historic Lal Mahal — a monument etched in the memory of every Punekar as the childhood home of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. More than just an architectural replica, the tableau vividly brings to life one of the most daring episodes of Maratha history — the moment when Shivaji Maharaj struck the Mughal general Shahistekhan inside Lal Mahal, cutting off his fingers, while his loyal mavlas stood guard.

The structure, crafted from wood and sheets using laser-cut precision, took over a month of meticulous work. Each window, wall, and arch has been recreated with striking attention to detail.

Speaking about his inspiration, Balkawade said, “I have always been fascinated by Lal Mahal and Shivaji Maharaj’s history. For this project, I visited Lal Mahal multiple times at different hours of the day, observing the architecture closely and taking photos to capture its essence. My aim was to make this display as authentic as possible, not just an artistic model but a tribute.”

For Balkawade, the effort goes beyond artistry. “Through this miniature, I want people, especially the younger generation, to remember the courage and legacy of Shivaji Maharaj and his mavlas,” he added.

In a gesture that reflects both devotion and community spirit, Balkawade plans to donate the model to Lal Mahal after the Ganesh festival, ensuring it becomes a lasting symbol of Pune’s cultural pride.

Creativity at the Heart of Ganeshotsav
Every Ganeshotsav in Pune is a blend of devotion and imagination. From grand installations by public mandals to homegrown innovations like Balkawade’s Lal Mahal, the festival continues to weave together faith, art, and history.

This year, one young Punekar’s creation reminds visitors that the story of Shivaji Maharaj is not confined to history books or monuments, it lives on in the spirit of Pune, celebrated afresh each year in the glow of Ganeshotsav.
