Pune: CM Devendra Fadnavis Inaugurates Pune Metro’s Landmark Pedestrian Bridge at Sambhaji Garden
Sinhagad Road, 1st September 2025: Pune got a striking new addition to its skyline on Monday as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the much-awaited pedestrian bridge linking Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden Metro Station to Shaniwar Peth.
Hailed as a “marvel of engineering and design” by the Chief Minister, the bridge is expected to be a game-changer for metro accessibility, offering safer and quicker passage for citizens living in the densely populated Peth areas.
What sets this bridge apart is not just its functionality but also its unique design inspired by Pune’s cultural soul. With a towering 70-degree inclined concrete pylon supported by 20 high-tension cables, the cable-stayed structure spans 179.7 metres in length and 8 metres in width. Importantly, with just two pillars resting in the Mutha River, the design ensures uninterrupted water flow.
In a nod to Pune’s musical legacy, particularly with the nearby Balgandharva Rangmandir, the bridge has been aesthetically shaped to resemble a tanpura, blending engineering brilliance with artistic symbolism.
The pedestrian bridge is part of Phase 1 of the Pune Metro project, designed to connect Deccan Gymkhana and Sambhaji Garden metro stations with the historic Peth localities across the river. The completion of the Sambhaji Garden–Shaniwar Peth link will benefit thousands of residents from Shaniwar Peth, Narayan Peth, and adjoining areas, making daily commutes faster, safer, and more convenient.
The event witnessed the presence of Union Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol, Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, MLAs Hemant Rasane, Sunil Kamble, and Siddharth Shirole, alongside Maha Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar.
